My work explores personal and social concerns, place, memory, nature and the human body by synthesizing figurative and abstract elements with paint and found papers from popular culture — wallpaper, magazines, newspapers, comics — and my own photographs. My layering process begins as an improvisation and an appreciation of how torn posters on subway and building walls reveal layers of memory as the disparate parts unravel and unexpected realities emerge. Through this additive process my surfaces become interwoven networks and dense webs of vision reflective of our packed urban environment. The work constantly changes and fractures as papers are added, sanded, painted ,and repainted. The distressed surfaces, fragile female images and textures have personal associations as they fuse with fields of color, form and pattern. My painterly artists books use color and line to investigate these same concerns and are interested in the surprises and transformations that occur when two dimensional images are folded and manipulated into sculptural forms.
